We have traveled to some amazing places, and we can’t possibly see ourselves stopping at all. There is so much of the world to discover. In the coming years we look forward to getting to discover new places and seeing more of some of the places we have loved. What’s on our list for the end of 2024 and 2025?
New Destinations to See
The Italian Dolomite’s
We have been to Italy a few times now, but we have never made it to the dolomite’s region. We had previously been focussed on areas with art and history and there never seemed to be enough time to spend days hiking. But that’s exactly what we want to do. We want to spend 2 months in this region hiking the mountainous landscapes and visiting charming Italian villages. Sitting on a porch with a great view and discovering areas only frequented by locals.
Patagonia
When looking at images of the vistas of Patagonia, all we can do is gaze in wonder. Its snow-capped mountains, glacier lakes and days of hiking make us giddy with excitement. For the first time in a while art and history isn’t as much of a priority. Seeing the grandeur of nature and travelling to places that you can’t get to by car is much more appealing.
Eastern Europe
This is an area that doesn’t get the volume of tourists that the west of Europe does. We have wanted to spend time here for a while but with our Schengen limitations we always seem to not have enough time. This is an area that will probably require the use of a car which should allow us to see and do so much more. Albania, Montenegro, Slovenia, Austria, Hungry Czechia, and Romania are some of the top western European places we would like to see.
Scandinavia
We have only visited Denmark and we fell in love. We need to focus a good chunk of time seeing Norway, Sweeden, Estonia, Finland and more. We love how family oriented these counties are and their natural beauty is why we have it as a must do for 2025. Hopefully our Schengen limitations don’t keep us from seeing more of Scandinavia.
New Zealand
We want to visit New Zealand for its epic landscapes and Lord of the Rings film locations. When we think of fantasy and magic New Zealand is a place that comes to mind. Not just for its adventurous activities but for its nature. We are hoping to avoid our winter and spend December of 2024-Febuary of 2025 here. It’s a long way away and would be our first destination on the Oceana Continent.
Some honorable mentions for places we also want to visit would be Hawaii, China and Antarctica. There is so much to see.
Locations We Want to Revisit
Scottish Highlands
In 2023 we spent 1 month in Edinburgh and did a 1-week road trip to the highlands. This was defiantly not enough, and we ran out of time to see some bucket list places. Especially locations on the Isle of Sky. So, our goal is to spend 2-3 months here hiking and doing some island hoping. We loved learning about the historical battles and visiting Harry Potter filming locations. We will be a lot more prepared to face the wet, windy cold days when we return. Proper rain gear is a definite necessity.
London
We absolutely love London, and this city has so much to do. We want to spend 1-2 months in the center of the city so we can walk the different neighborhoods, eat lunch in the parks and take pictures of all the charming architecture. With so many free museums we can take our time and view a few areas a day without feeling overwhelmed. Making sure to learn as much as possible. The iconic views of this city are abundant, and we want to feel like a local for a while.
Cusco, Peru
Cusco was a place that took a while for us to acclimate to. As a result, we had to skip hikes we really wanted to do. You can easily spend 2 months here hiking so many different locations and that’s exactly what we want to do on our next visit. Locals are discovering new areas to bring tourists to. With so many hikes starting with 2–3-hour drive, it would be better to not have to rush our time there. We fell in love with this city in August of 2024 and a return visit is a must. With the best food in all South America, we won’t go hungry here. Our bike trip above is offered as part of a day trip or multi day trip from Cusco.
Japan
Japan made a large impact on us. Our entire visit felt magical. The cherry blossoms, the culture, the kindness of its people and the respectful order. It all made us realize that we didn’t have nearly enough time to explore what this country had to offer. As Canadian citizens we can spend up to 3 months per visit and we have decided that our next visit must be in time to see the fall colours. If we are lucky, we might be able to squeeze in some time to ski in the north. But ideally spending some time in Nagano, around mount Fuji and in the north is where we will focus. There is so much to discover and getting off the tourist trail will be nice too. Especially when heading to the islands.
Vietnam
Vietnam was our first destination in Asia, and I hated it. When we left, I realized that I was in a bad place and actually loved most of the places we visited. I ran out of time when planning it and the culture shock of being in Asia really took a toll on me. We were being charged extra for everything and this cheep destination was not as affordable as people had claimed. We went here when still working full time and were not as well traveled. Our next visit would allow for some overnight cave hikes and a motor bike trip around the country. We would make time to see the north and try to spend some more time taking trains. Getting off the tourist track and not rushing from place to place.
Some honorable mentions for places we need to revisit are Costa Rica, Jordan, the Netherlands, and Indonesia. All off which were memorable. We have so much to see, and they needed more of our time.
